The reviews of "Rocky 6," oh, excuse me, "Rocky Balboa," seem to be quite positive. The movie surprised many people, whose initial reaction was that Stallone must be smoking crack.
As the Times critic noted:
When I first learned of this film, presumably the final episode in the "Rocky" franchise, the idea of the 60-year-old Rocky going at it one last time
sounded risible. Reports of audiences snickering derisively at trailers
for the movie seemed to confirm my expectations.
The Times critic and the snickering audience thought the idea of a 60-year old Rocky taking on a much younger opponent to be absurd.
But I had no doubt about Rocky's strength or conditioning. I knew that a 60-year old Rocky will be stronger than ever. You see, the audience didn't understand the true source of Rocky's power: Flashbacks.
Yes, flashbacks. Flashbacks are to Rocky what Spinach is to Popeye.
You all know the training scenes. Rocky trains, has flashbacks, grunts, and gets stronger.
He has Flashbacks of Apollo getting killed by Drago. Flashbacks of fighting Mr. T. Flashbacks of Mic yelling at him. Flashbacks of Adrian crying. Flashbacks of flashing back to another movie's flashback.
So now that we're on to the sixth movie in the franchise, Rocky has a much more extensive archive of flashbacks. Rocky is more powerful than ever.
